Configuring ImageMagick RAW Delegates with DCRAW and UFRAW Batch It s not very often that I take the time to make technical posts for all of the complexities that go into my personal website but this one was so frustrating and time consuming that I figured I would share my findings with the world I ve also been having to do a lot of ImageMagick work in my professional life lately and so I fully understand the frustration of not having good documentation on some of this strong u The problem u strong I have a bunch of CR2 files in my photo gallery RAW image files shot on a Cannon I am using ImageMagick for a bunch of different processing components including resizing the images for my gallery Unfortunately ImageMagick was failing due to UFRAW batch not being found The error would look something like this pre style width 480px white space pre wrap code class bash convert delegate failed ufraw batch silent wb camera black point auto exposure auto create id also out type png out depth 16 output u png i error delegate c InvokeDelegate 1061 code pre After doing a ton of research and trying to hunt down ways to make ufraw batch work with ImageMagick I finally went down a different path of deciding to configure DCRAW as my RAW file ImageMagick delegate This method wound up working perfectly but it does require some special configuring I ve detailed that process below strong u Assumptions u strong The following installation was done on an Amazon AMI instance essentially a CentOS machine with ImageMagick 6 7 8 9 2015 10 08 Q16 installed It also assumes the user has ROOT access and that all of the steps are performed as ROOT strong u Installing DCRAW u strong ul li If you haven t already sudo to root br pre style width 480px white space pre wrap code class bash su u strong At this point you may find that you need to install the em liblcms em dependency If this has happened then the installation of your RPM package will have failed If DCRAW installed without any problems then skip to the libJpeg section below If there was a dependency problem take a look at the following ul li Download liblcms br pre style width 480px white space pre wrap code class bash wget 1 el6 x86_64 rpm code pre li ul Please note that there could certainly be other dependencies missing as well This was simply a problem that I ran into with a pretty typical modern Linux installation br strong u Installing libJpeg for cjpeg u strong At this point DCRAW should be installed on your system The best you ll really be able to do is to convert to either a TIFF file or get a raw stream of JPG The problem with the RAW stream assuming you re wanting to export to a jpeg as most people will want to do is that it doesn t help you to actually compress the JPG stream into a usable file If you try to simply pipe the STDOUT to a file xxx jpg for example the image won t load as it won t be properly compressed for jpeg specs You ll need to use em cjpeg em or a similar tool to accomplish this final piece ul li Download cjpeg br pre style width 480px white space pre wrap code class bash wget http downloads sourceforge net libjpeg turbo libjpeg turbo 1 4 2 tar gz code pre li li Unzip the gzip file and extract the tarball br pre style width 480px white space pre wrap code class bash gunzip libjpeg turbo 1 4 2 tar gz br tar xvf libjpeg turbo 1 4 2 tar code pre li li Go into the newly extracted directory and install libjpeg br pre style width 480px white space pre wrap code class bash cd libjpeg turbo 1 4 2 br configure br make br make install code pre li ul br strong u Testing cjpeg u strong At this point you should have DCRAW any necessary dependencies and cjpeg installed on your system Incidentally cjpeg will likely have been installed to em opt libjpeg turbo bin cjpeg em If you can t find it do the following ul li Update the mlocate database and find the jpeg tool br pre style width 480px white space pre wrap code class bash updatedb br locate cjpeg code pre li ul From here you ll have the fully qualified path of where the cjpeg executable lives Mine was installed to em opt libjpeg turbo bin cjpeg em which I assume is a standard location for this program br strong u Configuring ImageMagick Delegates u strong So the final part of this process is to configure the RAW delegate for ImageMagick so that instead of trying to use em ufraw batch em it instead uses your newly installed em dcraw em u Be sure to backup your delegates xml file before making any changes to the file You can break your installation of ImageMagick if you re not careful u ul li The Death of Sparkle Motion photo 2369 213 300 right Sparkle Motion after I painted the flag of New Zealand on her photo If you are not already familiar Sparkle Motion is the name given to our mighty Kiwi flag bearing Subaru Rather than bore you with details we will get right down to her last voyage strong From Dunedin to Queenstown strong a href tags Sean Peterson Sean a a href tags Tisa Peterson Tisa a and myself left Dunedin on Wednesday afternoon amazingly enough right on schedule of 3 00pm Before taking to the road we aired up the tires tyres in N Z properly and filled the pipes with oil to ensure a safe trip to Queenstown about 4 hours to the southwest of Dunedin Within about 20 minutes of passing Mosgiel just outside of Dunedin the car started smoking from the right part of the hood We continued on for a short while longer with small bursts of white smoke every so often until eventually pulling over to find out that the radiator had sprung a leak and was steaming hot smoke onto the battery We were not concerned with the battery but knew without a proper cooling system the car would overheat After trying to go a few more kilometers the temperature began rising and we were forced to turn back with the intent of heading back to Dunedin About 10km back towards Dunedin we stopped in at a B P and had a look Not only was the radiator pressure not holding but there was no coolant left in it Worse off is that they seem not to use anti freeze in this country and so the radiator has small rust deposits here and there from water erosion Much to our surprise we were able to pick up a small bottle of radiator solder We added this magic potion into the radiator pipe as instructed by the package and the serviceman and within minutes the hole had disappeared and the radiator was fixed or at least holding for the time being We drove to Queenstown monitoring the area and car temperature all the way without any problems Upon our two days in Queenstown and Wanaka much hilarity and shenanigans ensued but thats a different story strong From Lake Wanaka to Ranfurly strong After an afternoon of fishing in Lake Wanaka we reeled in 1 salmon and 1 trout we began heading back for Dunedin at about 5 00pm Sparkle Motion was running quite well as we passed through Cromwell Upon getting to Alexandra we decided that we would take the scenic route between there and Dunedin so we could see more of the country This took us down Route 85 Upon traveling down Route 85 for an hour or so we noticed that the car had begun smoking again The problem was the radiator leaking once more and so steam was shooting out from the right side of the car the drivers side in NZ We continued driving but kept a close eye on the temperature We finally came upon a town called Ranfurly which is about 130km from Dunedin We stopped in Ranfurly to check the radiator but also noticed a worse smell As it had happened some oil had begun dripping onto the engine and was being burned off This of course created even more smoke and smelled terribly After checking the oil level and thinking that everything was A OK we took back to Route 85 After about 10km of driving we were noticing heaps of white smoke shooting out the rear exhaust and then a bit more coming out of the front We deduced that we had put in too much oil and it was overspilling and furthermore burning We continued on but with extreme caution but at about 7 00pm and still 110km from Dunedin the car began handling poorly as we had just turned off of Route 85 and onto Route 87 which is the even more scenic route into Dunedin a href tags Sean Peterson Sean a and I got out of the car to investigate the matter but could see nothing more than a small cloud of white smoke coming from the engine block There was white smoke coming from the engine hot steam spraying from the radiator and a small oil leak on the concrete below We decided to start the car with the hood up to get a better idea and as I turned the key a bucket of oil fell onto the concrete below We had located the problem the Exxon Valdez was nothing compared to our car Assuming that the oil would hold we decided to head back to Ranfurly as we obviously needed repairs About halfway there the car became entirely inoperable as clouds of white smoke covered the air and we left a trail of oil behind us We pulled over at the entrance to a farm and began looking to fix the car We realized fairly quickly that the pressure sensor connected into the oil well that reads the oil pressure had blown apart and thus created a large hole for oil to drain Of course as we drove the oil would get pushed by the wind and hit the hot engine block causing it to burn and produce copious amounts of white smoke Add that to the already existing radiator steaming a href tags Sean Peterson Sean a and I tried to fix the car for about 2 hours with my Leatherman but we just could not wedge anything in there with enough force to combat the 60psi of pressure that the well was yielding About 8 cars had asked us if we needed assistance by now and with an huge windstorm coming in and nightfall upon us we had the 9th car take us back to Ranfurly To make this long part of the story short we found a mechanic still available but after several attempts at fixing the car it needed to be towed back to Ranfurly We gave the hotel manager the fish that we had caught and he put the three of us in a room without charge When we got up the next morning the car had already been fixed and went on our way Minus 150 00 kiwi dollars strong Driving From Ranfurly to Dunedin strong If this were an epic drama this is the part where it would all come together at once We made it back to Route 87 and casually drove along for about 20 minutes or so until slowing for a one lane bridge To those not familiar with one lane bridges a common New Zealand site they are simply one lane bridges where one side yields right of way to the other If the bridge is long enough it will typically have midpoint nooks for cars to wait in while another goes by As I slowed for the bridge I proceeded to down shift in the usual fashion The bridge appeared clear and so I began to accelerate and enter it I accelerated past my next gear speed and as I stepped on the clutch to up shift both a href tags Sean Peterson Sean a and I heard a loud pop So now here we were driving down a one lane bridge in the south of New Zealand with a flag bearing twenty year old Subaru which now had no clutch and consequently no way for me to control the car s speed Again we tried to fix the problem but could barely tell what it was All of the springs seemed to be in tact We finally decided to put the car into first gear start it up while pressing the gas and power shift it into the other gears In case you are not familiar with power shifting it is shifting gears without the use of the clutch This worked But I could neither down shift nor start from a stopping position which posed some problems driving through a mountain range We made it back to Mosgiel about 20 minutes south of Dunedin and when we got to the first traffic light I turned off the car put it in first waited for the green and started it up once again Everything was going fine until we got into Dunedin where there is a giant mountain the highway goes up About 5 6 of the way to the top the car would go no more as smoke began pouring out every which way A passerby had a tow rope and pulled us to the top of the mountain through the speeding traffic The problem was now that we could no longer start the car in gear as something had gone wrong in the gearbox apparently photo 4225 385 300 right Sparkle Motion getting towed away photo So for the next two hours a href tags Sean Peterson Sean a and I worked as a diligent and slightly frightened team to get the car back to my house The procedure worked by having me put the car into first gear and turn the key while a href tags Sean Peterson Sean a pushed This would generate enough spark to get the car going but a href tags Sean Peterson Sean a would have to run along and manage to jump into the moving car as there was no way for me to stop Up and down hills and mountains through yield signs technically Give Way signs in New Zealand traffic and stoplights we eventually got the car back to my house where it stunk of a burning transmission The car let off a light smoke for several hours afterwards from the oil we had burned and there was even a small puddle from all of the radiator fluid a k a water that had leaked out of the rusting apparatus Suffice to say this would be the last time Sparkle Motion was ever started
RTF 316 Lucky Me Kevin Ludlow Paper II Lucky Me RTF 316 History of Radio and Television Amanda Lotz November 24 1998 As television moved into American homes in the early 50 s racism certainly came with it Although racism was something that was clearly evident in America around that time television had a unique way of presenting it to look like it was not a problem of the time From shows with white stars like The Rifleman to shows that had African American stars such as Amos n Andy racism was always evident in the script When looking at a particular text such as The Rifleman it is generally easy to pick out bits of racism throughout the show The reason it is so easy for us to pick it out is simply because we live in a period where racism although it exists is generally seen as wrong Although many civil rights movements occurred within the 50 s and 60 s African Americans were still segregated and viewed as an inferior race to many In the show The Rifleman Chuck Connors stars the show as the character Lucas McCain He lives with his boy Mark on a ranch somewhere in New Mexico Within the five years that it was on the air there were many shows that dealt with issues of racism towards not only African Americans but also Native Indians African Americans were commonly shown to be thieves and cheap laborers They were not stars of the show by any means and if they were to appear chances are they would be rebels of the town and Lucas would have to hunt them down Many shows also had Indian characters that were generally threats to the community Uniquely enough if they honestly were non hostile Indians who meant no harm to the community Lucas would side with them On the flip side the town would turn against them no matter what the situation was Native Indians were viewed as the lowest class of people in the area They were disrespected mocked and distrusted even when they did nothing wrong The townspeople in New Mexico often wanted to gun them down clean their town even though the Indians caused little havoc Chuck Connors was the dominant white male character that the society of that time viewed to be in control of everything He was on the side of the sheriff and of the townspeople and wanted justice to always be served He was a single father and did an excellent job raising Mark which made him the type of character that people wanted to be Perhaps it was because of this heroic character that the show became so popular Of course with so many people watching shows that constantly portrayed minorities as having unacceptable qualities it is no wonder racism was so out of hand Maybe if networks had shows that stared African Americans people would have viewed them differently on the other hand maybe it would make it worse Although a predecessor of The Rifleman Amos n Andy was a show that not only stared African Americans was centered on them as well Staring Alan Childress as Amos and Spencer Williams as Andy their show was a relatively popular sitcom derived from the even more popular radio show The shows were often focused on Kingfish played by Tim Moore He usually had some sort of idea or scheme to make his lifestyle better or more particularly to become wealthy Although the show was focused on the African American community it portrayed blacks in a terrible sort of way The general character on the show was a poor porch sitter who barely made enough money to get by on a regular basis The characters did not stand up for things that they believed in especially to white folk They were uneducated loud obnoxious and worst of all were portrayed to have the worst English grammar in society The women of the show were portrayed to be just as loud and obnoxious but also very demanding and general nuisances to their husbands In the episode of The Happy Stevens we are able to see exactly how a typical wife acted on the show Sapphire Ernestine Wade is constantly nagging at the Kingfish to act more like their favorite radio show The Happy Couple We see how Kingfish miserably tried to mimic the show the best that he can by using cheap imitations of The Happy Couple s ideas Such disregard for the Kingfish s taste would never have been shown had he been white The show was watched by millions of people across America from children to elderly people More importantly African Americans watched it too Although blacks were being represented on the television they would have probably been better off without being so Not only did people of the time get to see white folk make fun of African Americans they got to see African Americans make fun of themselves Although we are now able to look back at how racism was portrayed on television we must ask ourselves has it gotten any better I think that the answer is no Directors and producers have simply done a much better job of incorporating racism into shows without us realizing it Even in much more recent shows African Americans are still portrayed to be more deviant characters in society Take for example the popular seven year show of Designing Women One of the main characters of the show is Anthony Bouvier played by Meshach Taylor Anthony is portrayed to be a hard working and educated friend and employee of the Sugarbaker firm He was on the show from the beginning until the end and even though he was such a hard worker his past always seemed to come up He had served time in prison for a crime he had committed some time ago and many episodes incorporate racist humor on him Suzanne Sugarbaker played by Delta Burke often makes comments about Anthony that are shots against the African American community Of course she does them in a way that seems so natural and innocent that we can not help but realize that she is joking Although she is his friend and she means no harm upon him her views towards African Americans are openly expressed in a humorous way to him throughout her five years on the show Racism will most likely be a problem that occurs long past our lifetimes but is it really necessary for television shows to take advantage of it Most everyone is guilty of finding a great deal of humor in the racist jokes that we hear on television Many of us do not even view it as racism because it seems so naturalized on television It will be hard for the world to be completely non racist as long as television is part of our lives and racism is part of television I would like to think that I know how it feels to have an entire viewing audience laughing at me but unfortunately I will never know I am a white male who is supposed to find humor in it lucky me
Stylish Bluebird House Plans photo 1221615 1223577 0 right One of the completed and installed birdhouses photo My friend s dad found the plans to this a href https www familyhandyman com project build a bluebird house title https www familyhandyman com project build a bluebird house particular birdhouse on a handyman site a There is currently a sizable grass roots effort across the United States to repopulate bluebird populations and these particular birdhouses are specifically designed for doing just that Something about the shape and the opening is attractive to bluebirds over many other species This same friend of mine recently purchased a large piece of property deep in the woods and has been working to attract any number of bird species I thought it would be fun to construct a few birdhouses for her property but didn t really have a starting point So I took these plans and made a number of fancy modifications to them just to make them much more aesthetically pleasing and hopefully much more durable in the elements The birdhouses are designed with a swivel door so that they can be easily opened and cleaned from time to time While it s not entirely necessary to include that functionality they came out very nicely and the mechanics work well strong Materials Needed strong table tr td strong Qty strong td td strong Item strong td td strong Purchase br Price strong td Cutting out the Pieces strong I won t go into all of the details on how to cut the dimensions of the birdhouse namely as they re all available in some detail on the original website but would instead just note that the project is probably easiest with a jigsaw You can configure a table saw to do the cuts but I found it much easier just to use the jigsaw and then handle any straightening during the sanding process I should note that this is also a perfect project for all of the scrap wood that you might have lying around While the birdhouses are larger than any others I ve built in the past they still don t require all that much material There are just three sides and a roof the entire back and separating pieces inside of the birdhouse are all constructed from a single 2x4 After you finish cutting out the pieces described in the plans you should have 7 unique cuts of wood two sides a front door without the door hole a roof the top 2x4 the midpoint 2x4 and the birdhouse stem 2x4 photo 1216420 1213140 0 center The various pieces of wood for a single birdhouse after making all of the required cuts photo photo 1216444 1213140 0 center A collection the assembled birdhouses photo strong Birdhouse Assembly strong The assembly of birdhouse should be pretty straightforward to anybody even nominally capable of doing craft construction projects The original plans used nails for the construction but I thought it would be nicer to use GRK finishing screws These are extremely thin screws and have no kind of visible head on them This makes them ideal for countersinking which is of course why they re used for finishing With a little dab of extra paint over the holes the birdhouse will appear as if it has been glued together Incidentally you can use wood glue for the entire process but there s really no advantage and then have to wait for it to dry If the goal is merely to hide the screws then either finishing or cabinet screws should do the trick Either way it s just a birdhouse so there s really no wrong way photo 1211645 1213140 0 right A rough version of what the door hole looks like after being cut This one got a little scraped up but it still works just fine photo strong Cutting the Front Door Hole strong I tried cutting the door hole using a variety of methods on my drill press but the bottom line is that it s just very difficult to use a boring bit for overlapping holes Not to mention you d still need to trim the edges of the hole slightly to get the ovular shape With that in mind I found it best just to use a jigsaw If you re going to be making several of these birdhouses at once a I did then it would probably be easiest to create some kind of template on paper first This way you can just set the paper atop the door and use a punch or pin to trace out the door hole Whatever method you use the jigsaw will work best for the cut itself The original plans suggest scraping up the inside of the hole so that the birds have something to grip onto when entering the birdhouse So don t worry about the hole not being perfectly smooth This is actually to the advantage of the final product strong Painting the Birdhouse strong Painting the birdhouse is a pretty simple and fun process I found it easiest to use foam brushes They re cheap effective and more than large enough for expedient painting I wound up applying 4 or 5 coats to these birdhouses and sanded them with a high grit paper to give them a smooth looking surface Keep in mind that the first two coats are going to absorb pretty heavily into the wood so you re really just create a base layer You can apply a primer first if you want to but I didn t think it was necessary to do this since it was just as easy to add additional coats Try not to get any paint on the inside of the birdhouse itself I used some paper towels and tape to prevent this from happening but you can also just be careful It s likely that a little bit of paint will get inside of the door hole opening but this can just be sanded out later The airholes require slightly more attention as the plastic bushings won t properly fit if there is a buildup of paint inside of them photo 1209755 1213140 0 center Three of the birdhouses drying in the sun before the next coat photo photo 1209840 1213140 0 center Continuing to add coats of paint to the birdhouses photo photo 1211200 1213140 0 right Playing with one of the airhole bushings photo strong Adding the Airhole Bushings strong Once all of the painting is completed you can finally install the plastic airhole bushings These certainly aren t necessary but add a really nice flair to the final product They re also useful in preventing the airholes from getting warped and rotting out in any kind of way You may need to clean up the inside of the holes ever so slightly I just used a small piece of 60 grit sandpaper to smooth them out The 5 8 bushings should fit perfectly into the 5 8 holes you drilled They re a light plastic so be sure to use a gentle mallet if you encounter any resistance they will definitely break if you hit them too hard strong Cutting the Trim Pieces strong I m not going to lie this part is a real pain in the ass It will absolutely require some kind of miter saw and ideally one with a high tooth sharp blade given you ll be cutting polystyrene There s really no good way to join the two pieces along the front perfectly together at the bottom corners but you can give the illusion of this with some careful cuts photo 1209766 1213140 0 right Testing one of the trim pieces against the front edge of a birdhouse photo Since the birdhouse has been cut using 63 degree and 27 degree angles you ll want to set the miter saw for 27 degrees It s probably going to take a little playing with it to see which direction the molding has to be cut I found it easiest to cut a piece about 20 long place it along the front edge it s going to be affixed to and then use a pencil to draw the angled direction of cut The front molding will need to hang down slightly lower than the birdhouse walls so that it can be joined to the base molding I won t go into textual details on how to accomplish this but if you look closely at the picture provided you should be able to recreate the process To keep myself humble I should note that I went through quite a few pieces before I finally settled on a cutting pattern that worked for my tastes strong Attaching the Trim Pieces strong Attaching the trim pieces is actually a pretty fun step I decided to go with the copper nails for durability in the elements but also because I happened to like the aesthetic of making them visible along the edges I used my nail gun and air compressor for the first version but found it difficult to purchase 3 4 brad nails at my local store After experimenting with a few different materials I found that the copper heads provided a good contrast against the black You can really do this part any which way you like but I did meticulously measure out the sides and then affix the nails at even intervals Again this is entirely for the aesthetic of it So long as the trim is properly affixed to the underlying wood it ll work just fine strong Adding the Door Lynch Pin and Chain strong photo 1220990 1223581 0 right Holding one of the lynch pins against the left side of the door I wound up placing all of them on the right side of the birdhouses photo I tried a variety of different locking pins and lynch pins for the front door but none of them really accomplished what I was hoping to find My Schlage keypadded door came with a special tool for opening the door in an emergency I noticed that it was the perfect size for a lynch pin and found that I was able to order additional ones directly from the manufacturer on Amazon Use a 3 32 bit and drill the lynch pin hole so that it aligns with the bottom of the bird hole entrance Be sure to align the drill on the side so that it s as centered as possible in the front door Once the hole has been drilled and you ve tested the lynch pin use about 4 5 inches of the brass 5 5mm chain and one of the 4 brass wood screws The brass chain is malleable and should be easy to affix onto the side of the door The lynch pin can just be slid into one of links of the chain and will rest in the looped part This part isn t entirely necessary but given that the birdhouses should be cleaned at least once per year and the fact that the lynch pin is so small it just seemed like a better way to ensure it doesn t get lost during cleaning photo 1221153 1223581 0 center Experimenting with the brass chain photo strong Creating the Mount Points strong photo 1221578 1223577 0 right Affixing the tie plate to the back of the birdhouse photo Starting on the front side of the birdhouse place a mark in the dead center of the 2x4 about 2 from the very bottom of the 2x4 Place another mark in the dead center of the 2x4 where the base of the house walls end Using a 3 16 drill bit drill holes through These will be used for the mounting screws along the stem Flip the birdhouse over and place the tie plate at the very top so that just one row of holes is exposed above the birdhouse itself Use a sufficient number of the Spax 8 3 4 construction screws to affix the tie plate to the back of the birdhouse We ll use the center hole on the top row as a means to secure the top of the birdhouse to a tree You can skip this step if you re planning to mount the birdhouse to a pole strong Affixing to a Tree strong photo 1221254 1223577 0 right The ladder leading up to the mount point for the purple birdhouse photo Insert a 3 10 Spax Construction screw into each of the two holes on the stem I found it best to get them started so that it was easy to screw them into the tree when I was hanging by the ladder The two screws along the stem are likely more than enough to affix the birdhouse to a tree but it s best to use the exposed tie plate as a final mounting hole The screws should be more than long enough to seal against the tree with a significant bit of pressure
