New Website Progression Updates It s been a couple of months since I finally decided that it was time for a full overhaul of kevinludlow com and there have been some pretty significant changes already made to the architecture of the site I was joking to DaveG just a couple of days ago how significantly my CMS architecture skills have improved since I first developed the concept back in 2005 and even since formally releasing it in 2007 The size of the codebase has been significantly reduced and puts much more strain on the SQL server for larger more complex operations as opposed to parsing data via code after simple queries Additionally most all of the original Javascript used has been replaced with jQuery or removed entirely While I m thrilled to have done this it s not entirely an original design flaw When I first began coding the system the jQuery library was not yet available and developers were essentially limited to the Prototype Scriptaculous packages To this day I contend that those packages are hugely bloated and should not be used for web development projects given the complexities that they add to the maintenance of projects This was especially the case in 2007 when I first released openFace given processors were that much slower and front end Javascript weighs a browser down Fortunately jQuery provides an excellent balance of functionality and programmability while still remaining pretty light provided one avoids their various UI packages In parallel to this development which is really just in my spare time I have been hiring people to take on the arduous tasks of scanning photos digitizing movies digitizing old audio recordings and etc As of this writing I already have 11 254 new photos that will be added to the website once it is fully launched though I m guessing it will be closer to 17 000 new photos once I m finished
The Spaghetti Blender photo 35355 741 0 right Taken about 10 minutes before Dayna flew over the handlebars and smashed her face photo In the late winter of 2001 Dayna and I took a trip up to visit her parents in Irving Texas Her family wanted to go over to the park and so they got her and I a pair of mountain bikes that we could ride around on Probably not more than an hour or so into our riding around Dayna somehow managed to slam on the front breaks causing the bike to flip forward She landed square on her face on the sidewalk below and to say the least was screaming in pain Her mom and I took her to the emergency room in Dallas and after a number of x rays and what I assume was a rather painful examination they concluded that she had broken her jaw and would need to have some wiring done It should be pretty obvious but there are lots of things you can t do when you have a broken jaw Some of them are worse than others but near the top of that list is eat solid foods Since you can t really apply any pressure to your jaw it s near impossible to chew Fast forward a week or two Dayna and I were back in Austin and she was really getting tired of not being able to eat anything Incidentally she had been living off of Broccoli Cheese Soup from Jason s Deli and was desperate for a change I felt awful for her and so one night invited her over to my house as somewhat of a dinner date night She was hanging out on the couch while I cooked a full meal of spaghetti and meat sauce I prepared it just as anyone would boiling the pasta cooking the meat simmering the sauce and mixing it all together Finally I was done Dayna was a bit confused as to why I would have gone through this effort seeing on how she couldn t eat it But I had a plan I took the entire meal and tossed it into my blender still piping hot I hit puree and let the blender do its thing What was left was this steaming hot pile of mush with little chunks of meat in it The excess starch in the pasta gave the meal a really interesting consistency We both sat down to have our mush meals only to find that they were about the worst tasting things we had ever tried Unfortunately and despite my best effort to give Dayna a good meal we couldn t eat them I still got credit for the nice gesture but for future reference blended spaghetti is NOT a good meal
The Paintball Gun This was an absolutely ridiculous idea from the get go but somehow Dave G and I thought it would be fun Since we were both making pretty good salaries and really not having much to pay for other than rent and bills we were buying all sorts of random toys for around the house One afternoon we took off to Academy and came across some paintball guns Thinking paintballing might be something we could get into we each bought a gun an over sized hopper and a box of paint Of course the problem with having a paintball gun is that you inevitably want to shoot it And once you shoot it you inevitably want to shoot it at something And after that milestone you inevitably want to shoot at someone Dave and I got the idea that we would each get to shoot the other person one time Dayna happened to come over and was more than happy to bear witness to this We drew to see who went first and Dave lost He marched over to a tree in our backyard probably about 20 yards away and turned his back to me I calked the gun told him I was going to fire and shot him square in the back He got a huge welt as we expected but was otherwise fine seeing on how he knew he was about to return the favor I marched over to the same tree and turned my back to Dave He fired but his first shot missed me This actually only made my situation far worse as I could literally hear the air from the paintball whizzing by my head The apprehensiveness of being shot from such a close distance was terrible Finally Dave took aim again and fired He hit me square in corner of my right ear It stung terribly and the entirety of my head and ear were covered in water based paint I have no idea what Dayna thought of all of this but she happily watched on
The Fifth Ward Sign photo 258011 740 0 right A map of the area detailing the various streets involved in this excursion photo When I was in high school one of the more interesting and regular gifts that I would get for people were street signs bearing their name It s not a practice that I encourage but it had its time in my youth Over the summer of 1998 I had started dating Sarah Wagner and wanted to get her one of these signs as well Since this was still really before the time of internet mapping I took to my local Target and looked up Sarah s name in one of the key map books When I ve told this story in the past occasionally someone is not familiar with a key map So just in case a key map is a bound book that has a map of every single street within a certain area usually a city A key map for the city of Houston probably has about three hundred pages to it The map showed that there was a tiny road called Sarah Street in northern central Houston smack dad in the center of the Fifth Ward It was late at night probably after 1am and I called up my dear friend Victor and asked him if he d join me He agreed and even drove We headed out into Houston from Katy turned up on 59 and drove into the Fifth Ward The scenery immediately changed Even though it was probably near 2am at this point there were people walking around everywhere Cars were parked three and four deep onto lawns at almost every home and there was definitely a sense of discomfort about the whole thing Victor and I couldn t find the street immediately and had different ideas on how to resolve this I thought we should just continue driving around looking for it but being one to trust anyone and everyone Victor decided that we would ask for directions Incidentally Victor is now a real life ordained Catholic priest He pulled up next to some guy standing in the middle of the road and asked him if he knew where Sarah Street was The guy said he would tell us for a dollar Victor paid him and he proceeded to give us directions He told us to go up the block turn left on Collingsworth and then turn left again at Carr Street That would take us where we wanted to go I did not have a very good feeling about this but we gave it a go Victor followed the guy s instructions We drove to the end of the street when two things occurred to me Number one was that we had just crossed into a train yard Number two was that the road we were on dead ended at said train yard I have no idea if the guy was sending us to get robbed or perhaps there was a drug house over there he assumed we were trying to buy from or if he was just sending us away But I do know that two white kids in a shiny Ford Ranger do NOT want to be at the dead end of a train yard in the Fifth Ward of Houston at 2am on bad information That is almost as bad as the string of prepositional phrases needed to describe the aforementioned problem I didn t really think much beyond that point other than to tell Victor to put it in reverse and to back out quickly He did It was the only sign I never successfully got

A Bit of Hot and Cold News strong strong I am still not exactly sure how this happened but a small mishap has finally taken place on the trip While running through Wellington to catch our bus back to Lower Hutt where the motor park was my camera somehow slipped from its bag It fell into the middle of the road and has been damaged The far right side of the lens has been cracked and the frame has loosened itself a little ways I have no idea how but it still takes fabulous pictures The only incident seems to arise from zooming to 200mm and trying to use the auto focus In such a setting it seems to pick up a bit of the fracture and hence cannot focus properly This also is not a problem since the camera has manual focus as well So sadly it is now a tainted camera but thankfully still in fine working order I would also like to note that all photos past the a title Te Papa National Museum href http 64 17 5 210 www kevinludlow com index php module Photos amp op album amp albumID 111 Te Papa National Museum a gallery will have been taken with the broken camera Please email me if you notice any flaws in the picture s Photo Gallery Updates Camper Van Animal Encounters a title Palmerston North href http 64 17 5 210 www kevinludlow com index php module Photos amp op album amp albumID 109 Palmerston North a a title Wellington href http 64 17 5 210 www kevinludlow com index php module Photos amp op album amp albumID 110 Wellington a a title Te Papa National Museum href http 64 17 5 210 www kevinludlow com index php module Photos amp op album amp albumID 111 Te Papa National Museum a a title Cook Straight href http 64 17 5 210 www kevinludlow com index php module Photos amp op album amp albumID 112 Cook Straight a a title Marlborough Sound href http 64 17 5 210 www kevinludlow com index php module Photos amp op album amp albumID 113 Marlborough Sound a
