RTF 316 The Lucky Seven Kevin Ludlow Paper I The Lucky Seven RTF 316 History of Radio and Television Amanda Lotz October 13 1998 After viewing the NBC television history movie I reminded myself of the media s What s Hot What s Not routine NBC being a large news source is able to manipulate the idea of agenda setting even when they are only reminiscing They have also shown the world a variety of changes in media technology by displaying the show in a variety of television formats black and white vs color and program formats as well entertainment vs news Having been the first real network in mass media NBC shows a great deal of character by showing off a small portion of more popular shows that have been aired since the birth of television They did not only show NBC run shows but also those of cable stations and the other major networks ABC CBS and even FOX As they began their clip NBC chose a U2 sounding drum and bass beat without words to introduce the viewer to the beginning of television similar to Where the Streets Have No Names Perhaps because at this point in time the television shows had no names simply meaning that the viewers could not associate with them in the same fashion that we can today Similarly as the years progressed so did the vocal content crying out that television shows finally had concrete names in people s lives The idea that we have advanced so quickly in mass media is an excellent parallel to the rapid speed of the program changes Not only were the shows mixed quickly they were also intermingled with news clips of the relevant time period as well NBC did a very good job of displaying the decade to the viewer and allowing us to see what the programming quality of that time period was like It was also very clear to see a push from black and white programming to color between the 1950 s and 1960 s decades It is simply impossible for NBC to have displayed every precious moment in television history in seven minutes The simple fact is that it would take about four hundred and twenty hours times the number of television stations basically every running hour of television to show off every great moment which again put delicately is impossible to recap Since the birth of the printing presses hundreds of years ago creators of media have done the same thing over and over again agenda setting Although very exciting and entertaining the entire seven minutes of this film exaggerate that idea to an extreme If we accept the idea that it is impossible to cram hours and hours of programming into a mere few minutes then who is to say what gets shown and what does not As always of course the media I imagine that many people alive in the 70 s got entirely sick of seeing Nixon s mishaps broadcast on television just as we today get sick of O J s affairs or even Clinton s The media has become so good at pounding information like that into the public s heads that we get sick of it However NBC pushes it upon us a bit more by showing all three examples in a history of television On the same note NBC showed us a clip of Kennedy s assassination followed by the Beatles Five incredibly popular men that most of the world would like to have seen more of in the same program with three men that most of the world love to see no more of The idea that the media can not give us certain beliefs is factual but it is quite obvious that they try their hardest to by choosing what we can and can not view I think it is safe to say that the world has listened to more sob stories from Monica Lewinsky on television then John Lennon ever had the time to even write The way in which NBC presented their clip was not only entertaining but clearly planned out carefully as well Their color and sound changes were shown in a very timely fashion according to the time period at hand The amount of symbolism used specifically with the sound and a selective few joint clips made the viewer think about exactly what television has meant to him or her over the years However although NBC did a relatively good job putting together an appropriate reel of clips for entertaining an audience they were unable to show an unbiased selection Perhaps someday NBC will be able to create a television history not of what they view it as but rather for what it is in its exactness I only hope that the unwanted show s producers can forgive history for not including them in the lucky seven minutes
HIS1301 The Conquest of Columbus Luther Elmore History 1301 Assignment 1 The Conquest of Columbus A journal worth exploring As noted in the first journal entries Columbus kept of their voyage he kept two separate accounts of the distances that had been traveled Looking back in history this obviously proved favorable to him on the voyage but one must ask why Similar to the time period that we are living in today there were definite classes of people whether we choose to acknowledge that today or not Sailors of the time were certainly of the class of people we would know as blue collar workers if not a shade below It was only the admirals of the fleet and a few select others chosen of the King and Queen that possessed the intelligence to understand the latitude of this journey Morals were certainly of importance on this voyage and what better way to keep the projected distance to the Indies close to track then to throw out white lies to the crew As most any modern text book or production will parody our government certainly does not tell us everything that goes on throughout our continued exploration of space for example They give us projected figures and this is all that we concern ourselves with because it is what we are told It gives us the clich d parental expression that we re almost there Furthermore it usually keeps us happy and anxiously waiting I speculate that Columbus was using the same psychology on his crew Curiously enough I find it surprising that such information ever went past the King and Queen of Spain and that it is such a tale we can read about today Another interesting factor of this story was the way that Columbus described everything that he encountered and even better how he had an explanation for most all of it It was most apparent as they sailed on the voyage and encountered mostly birds but also crabs whales and even drift Similar to a more modern explorer we know a great deal of it seems that Columbus was almost acting like Darwin someday would in his classifications He seemed to have an explanation for every creature that was seen whether it was one known to the Spaniards or not Humorously enough every creature that was encountered was believed to be only encountered x leagues away from land thus land must have always been nearby These statements may have been a bit pretentious of Columbus to declare especially to a man who would challenge a theory as bizarre as say The Earth if flat Nonetheless it was another tactic to keep the moral of the men up and most likely of Columbus himself While Columbus was probably more willing to trade fairly with the natives then his men were I think it is evident that he was happy to better deal them Still one could argue that the natives who had been accustomed to such commodities found it favorable to possess a piece of glass or a stain colored flag Unfortunately like most if not all other conquistadors of the time if Columbus meets that status the only thing that the natives lacked was Christian status I think its safe to say that if we look back in time problem after problem could have been avoided especially with native tribes had the explorers simply left religion alone If there was one thing that any one man of this time period wanted to possess it was power and riches As noted earlier the blue collar status of the sailors most likely led them to believe that they would never be powerful rulers but this also led them to believe that with riches they could live similar lifestyles There s no disputing the cause of most of the conquistadors of this time period riches Riches for them riches for the country and almost more importantly riches for the King and Queen of the era I am sure that in many of the sailor s hearts thoughts of gold and silver were the only things keeping them alive across the Atlantic Gold led to the later conquering of the Incas Aztecs Mayans and most every other tribe of Central and South America From a different perspective it only made sense for Columbus to seek such wealth as an explorer If he was to return to the islands or seek new land in other places he would have to return wealth The America s would have been of no use to the Spaniards had the commodities available not well exceeded the cost and dangers of the trip I found this extract to be very interesting in an overall sense In the middle of the journal I felt that I was reading a monotonous story but I suppose that my reading of it was nothing compared to the actual monotony of the voyage Society enjoys asking the question youths especially that if you could go back into time what time period would you like to live in To this day I have honestly always answered around the 1450 s I only wish that I could proposition our President to fund me on such an adventurous journey and to discover lands never found by the world as we know it Fortunately the King and Queen did not take a republican stance upon this request as I would now receive and allowed such a wonderful history to be uncovered I would love to have seen this article published in Spanish so that I could read it pre translated I simply feel that the non translated details I would notice would add to the visualization of the story Coincidentally I feel that visualizing history is what makes it interesting to read
My Magical Birthday Present For my recent 34th birthday a friend of mine got me what may very well be the coolest birthday present I ve ever received She asked me if I wanted to join her for a drink on the Sunday after my birthday up at the Iron Cactus a local Austin Mexican restaurant with a sizable bar I said I d love to and showed up at the requested time The place was completely empty save for the bartender and maybe 3 other patrons We had a drink or three and before long I noticed a guy moseying around the bar wearing all black He greeted the few other people in the bar before coming up to the two of us and introducing himself I was a little caught off guard but he soon introduced himself as a magician who frequented the Iron Cactus and asked if he could perform some illusions for us I excitedly told him he absolutely could and that I loved magic He began his little show They were really really good In fact he was just an all around spectacular performer and I was shocked that this guy would be doing rounds at a nearly empty bar After two or three different feats he apologized and asked if he was interrupting anything I told him no and that the lady sitting with me thoroughly enjoyed magic as well He continued After two more illusions both which were even more phenomenal than the previous ones he started chuckling a bit and asked my friend if he could tell me I had absolutely no idea what was going on here Once the wheels started turning I look over to her and exclaimed You got me a magician for my birthday At this point the magician chimed in and pointed out that not only did she get me a personal magic show but for the next hour and a half a href http www codyfisher com Cody the Magician a would be showing me HOW to perform the illusions he had just performed for us I was truly overjoyed with this as I have always wanted to learn how to perform some basic magic It was just awesome and I could not have been more surprised I even got to have an intelligent conversation with him about some of my world favorites most notably Derren Brown Ricky Jay and Jason Latimir Once he left we practiced one of the card tricks for about an hour before heading off to a party Twenty minutes in we performed that card trick to a handful of people and left them completely stunned I have now successfully pulled off ONE impressive card trick
The Milk Bath photo 311999 740 200 right photo In the fall of 2010 I was working on a large contract project in southern Oregon I loved the company I loved my coworkers and I most especially loved traveling to southern Oregon As is common with these types of contracts the contracting firm provided me with a daily stipend It was high I think they gave me 75 00 per day This might not seem like a ton of money but when breakfast is provided at your hotel and an average lunch costs maybe 12 finding a way to spend 63 00 every night in a small town becomes an interesting adventure Many of the other contracting companies made their employees a deal whereby they could get paid in cash albeit a lesser amount I asked my firm if they would allow this Instead of providing me with a reimbursable per Diem of 75 I asked if they could just pay me 45 in cash If they had I d have been motivated to spend less money they would have spent less money on me and both of us would have financially benefited They turned this down I had recently read about how a href http en wikipedia org wiki Milk_bath Cleopatra use to enjoy milk baths a The idea of this intrigued me There is lactic acid in milk and evidently soaking one s skin in this acid provides a very strong exfoliation I began stopping at the grocery store after work and would pick up a few gallons of milk I had a large refrigerator in my hotel suite After several days of this I had an entire refrigerator full of creamy whole milk After I d accumulated between 12 15 gallons of it I drew some piping hot water into the base of the bathtub and proceeded to fill it with all of the milk I had accumulated The hot water was just to make the bath comfortable since the milk was so cold It turns out that taking a milk bath is incredibly relaxing The milk leaves a thin coat on your skin each time you lift a part of your body out of the tub I have no idea how the exfoliation process actually works but I do know that my skin felt silky smooth after the bath I haven t appended the Wikipedia article yet but it is a fact that in addition to Cleopatra and Elizabeth I of England Kevin Ludlow has also indulged in a milk bath I would highly recommend it
Preliminary Modeling photo 311706 311912 0 right Lenticular Trusses at the Raleigh NC airport photo Below are two models front and rear view of what the current Axel Warehouse is intended to look like There is certainly not any granular detail of the actual office space s but the shell is pretty easy to visualize Although I have been looking forward to using the bow truss system as described in an older post it looks like we are now going to use an inverted triangular truss The system will basically consist of steel beams that lie flat across the roofline Each of them will have a cylindrical steel column extending down from the middle with steel tension rods spawning across both sides I was immediately sold on these after Matt Catterall showed me a picture of them from the Detroit Airport I am a huge fan of most modern airport architecture I had actually come across the same type of trusses back in March of 2011 at the Raleigh Durham airport in North Carolina I was in absolute awe of the way they had implemented them there an amazing combination of wooden beams with steel supports and tension rods Admittedly our system will not be nearly as impressive but the geometry of them is still very appealing The architects of this airport say that it is a type of Lenticular Truss system A snapshot of those trusses can be found to the top right photo 311721 311912 0 center Shell view from the front SW corner photo photo 311717 311912 0 center Shell view from the rear NE corner photo br style clear both The above models were created by Mary Franzosa a Cotera Reed employee with an architectural program called Rhinoceros I ve never actually used the program myself but seems like a considerably more intricate modeling version of Google Sketchup From what I could gather there is considerably more attention paid to the layering capabilities I believe as we get more granular with the interior CAD development that we ll be able to produce more and more intricate models

you will take advantage of this unique opportunity to communicate your views on public education to a vast audience div ol li strong Is there a need to increase funding to meet the needs of our student population If so how would you recommend securing more revenue for public education strong br No I do not believe there is a need to increase the funding to meet the needs of our student population There is however a great need to streamline costs and to cut wasted spending In my experience both as a student and observer of the public education system much of this waste can be found in administration boards and other bureaucratic educational positions that receive bloated public salaries and provide little to no value towards actual education Secondary to this would be properly utilizing technologies to streamline the costs of books papers and student administration li li strong Regardless of the level of funding do you believe that Texas public education dollars are being spent in an appropriate manner or should the funds be reallocated and spent in different ways strong br No I do not I believe that dollars in public education are largely being used to fund an enormous bureaucracy that benefits high level positions in education while ignoring the basic needs of students and teachers Funds should be allocated towards teacher salaries teaching tools a wide spectrum of academic studies eg arts trades music etc and proper nutrition li li strong Would you vote to spend public tax dollars on a voucher tax credit or scholarship that allows students to attend non public schools in grades K 12 Why or why not strong br While I would ideally like to reduce the amount of tax dollars necessary for education in the first place so long as we re arguing mid stream yes I would vote in favor of this The educational path of any student should be up to the parents of the student and the student him or herself not the state of Texas and certainly not the federal government There is no justifiable reason why parents who send their children to private institutions should not be reimbursed the same level of funding that they are otherwise being forced to spend by taxation to send their children to a public school li li strong Do you believe the Teacher Retirement System TRS should be maintained as a traditional defined benefit pension plan for all future current and retired educators or would you vote to convert TRS to a defined contribution plan that is more like a 401 k in which future benefits are not guaranteed Why strong br Since I am not a teacher I do not have a strong opinion one way or the other in this matter My understanding of the TRS from teachers who are economically informed is that it is run well If teachers are happy with their pension program I don t see any reason to change it li li strong Local decisions on whether to continue a teacher s employment and how much to pay each teacher are often based on evaluations To what extent if any should a teacher s evaluation be based on his students scores on state standardized tests If you believe student test scores should factor into a teacher s evaluation how would you recommend evaluating teachers in grades or subjects for which there are no state standardized tests strong br The current methodologies behind standardized testing are a travesty to the educational process They allow lazy and incompetent teachers to remain in place teaching material they may have no real comprehension of in the first place while at best ignoring and at worst penalizing the efforts of truly wonderful and gifted educators I believe evaluations should be made by highly competent overseers and should be based on criteria far beyond that of standardized testing In my opinion a teacher who is able to connect with a student is worth far more to that student than one who simply forces him or her to memorize a packet full of useless sample testing questions li li strong Would you vote to maintain a hard cap on the number of students per class or should school administrators be given more flexibility to increase class sizes Currently the law imposes a cap of 22 1 in grades K 4 but allows schools to obtain a waiver a step many of them routinely take strong br Specifically as I am in favor of vouchers administrators should be given the flexibility to run a school as they best see fit without nuanced ratios and state based calculations While I am sure such ratios are very well intended they simply can t account for the actual needs of the school li li strong If a public school in your district failed to meet state accountability standards for two or more consecutive years would you support allowing a private entity to take over the management of that school essentially converting it to a charter school strong br No While I am fully in favor of private schools so long as public dollars are being used to manage a school I am not in favor of mixing entities and otherwise paving the road for the government to pick their favorite private entities Private entities ought to be chosen by the marketplace and are ultimately a function of their successes or failures for that matter li li strong Do you believe charter schools in Texas have been largely successful Should their presence be expanded Why or why not strong br I m not familiar with data on this topic but I am sure such data exists to illustrate the successes and failures of charter schools That said and because they re ultimately privatized institutions I can see no reason why they should not be expanded if people are interested in expanding them li li strong You may use the space below to provide additional comments strong br It would be nice if more than the Republicans and Democrats were represented in the party affiliation section li ol
Preparing for a World Adventure photo 625220 740 0 right A very loose idea of where I am planning to travel to on the first leg of my world adventure photo It s been awhile since I ve contributed anything to my own blog but I think that s going to start changing pretty regularly As many of my friends know I had have been working on an extensive trip around the world that I had hoped would start around November of this year The plan was for the girlfriend and I to hit up about 40 countries maybe more around the globe We d start in southeast Asia then visit a few of the stans northern Africa Europe and then head throughout South American and the Caribbean Islands before returning home My hope was to do all of this over about 6 months but with the girlfriend no longer around that plan is no longer valid at least not with her I m certainly still doing it I ve been working hard on the first leg of my voyage The first series of destinations will be in Southeast Asia Specifically I am planning on flying into Bangkok exploring some of Thailand then traveling throughout Cambodia Laos and at least some of Vietnam If I m able to spend a few days in Burma I will do that too but nothing is definite just yet I still have to work on the specific details get various immunizations ensure I have all of the necessary gear and various little things in between Still though it s moving forward I m intending to do the first leg of all of this in 3 4 weeks and am excited to meet other travelers along the way and to share some adventures with random people likely mostly Europeans from around the globe Thankfully I have a nice house and dozens of wonderful friends who would like to stay at that house while I am gone My good friend DaveG quite the phenomenal world traveler himself will be watching little Atti while I m off on my adventures There is still some planning required for the second leg of the trip but I am hoping to walk the 600km Camino Santiago with my good buddy Ben before taking a road trip throughout Northern Europe Once we conclude that trip we ll hit up some of mainland Europe and ideally visit some of Northern Africa as well Hopefully I can get my personal view of the Egyptian pyramids at some point there
Packing Everything Up After an 8 day long visit with my dear old friend DaveG in Kansas City Missouri I am finally ready for my trip I leave for Chicago at 7 43 in the morning via Amtrak am meeting up with some friends in Chicago for lunch and then head to Chicago O Hare Airport in the evening for the first leg of my trip a flight to Bangkok Thailand by way of Taipei Taiwan photo 631697 632097 0 center Everything laid out and getting ready to be packed up photo br style clear both Being quite the world traveler himself Dave had a number of little bags that he was able to let me borrow to make my trip considerably more organized A little bag for socks and underwear another one for pills and medicine another for electronics etc photo 631638 632097 0 center Condensed down into the smaller packing bags photo br style clear both Ultimately I am bringing two bags with me One of them is my actual backpacking pack a beautiful new Osprey X 58 that I got from REI It s considerably larger than I actually need for all of my stuff but there is a reason for this that I will come to The other bag is a smaller CamelBak that Dave actually traded me for the Timbuk2 that I was originally planning to bring The smaller one is intended to hold my food computer and electronics the items that I never check in The larger Osprey holds all of my clothes medicine toiletries except for my toothbrush as you never know when you ll need it Once I clear customs in Thailand my plan is to pack the CamelBak inside of the Osprey That s why I got one that has extra space in it Once I am situated in my hostile in Bangkok I will reduce the CamelBak to just the bare necessities that I want to have while exploring the city photo 631700 632097 0 center and finally down into just these two bags photo br style clear both This will mostly be limited to my water camera wallet and copies of my identification just in case something should happen I am sure that I ll wind up purging a few items a long the way but after experimenting with all sorts of configurations and having done this many times in the past I m pretty sure that I have a good setup I guess I will find out tomorrow on my way photo 631688 632097 0 center And for my final trick the smaller bag goes into the larger bag photo br style clear both
Clearing Claire s Land photo 1201516 1209238 0 right The Husqvarna Chainsaw and accessories I purchased photo My dear friend Claire purchased a sizable piece of property in the general Asheville North Carolina area about a year ago I had been wanting to visit her for awhile and unfortunately wound up canceling a few potential visits with her towards the end of 2021 So I thought I d make the drive out her way and spend a few days with her A few days turned into a week and a week turned into three weeks It s a beautiful area Since I always love having a good project that I can work on this is generally how I thrive the most I asked her if there was anything at her house that she needed done She explained to me how she wanted to clear out all of the smaller trees in the forest next to her house so that it was walkable and so that the larger trees would continue to thrive Unfortunately she mentioned how she only had a small electric chainsaw Since I hadn t gotten her any kind of house warming present I drove over to the local Tractor Supply Company and purchased her a nice 14 Husqvarna Chainsaw I also had to pickup a gas can some oil and a few chains I d basically spend the mornings cutting down trees with the chainsaw lopping off the smaller branches and then either cutting the trunk into firewood logs or dragging the trunk in the case of smaller trees up the hillside to our giant pile photo 1201230 1209238 0 right Cutting down one of the trees in the forest photo Over the course of about 3 weeks I wound up cutting down somewhere between 250 and 300 trees I referred to this as chainsaw therapy We had a massive snowstorm come through sometime during my visit with her This cut into my morning therapy sessions but as soon as the snow cleared I got right back to it br style clear both photo 1201647 1209238 0 center The massive firewood pile that I wound up creating for Claire photo In cutting down all of the trees I wound up creating five massive brush piles While this is to be expected we still needed to get rid of them Her friends Geoff and Ashleigh came over one afternoon just as I had started burning off some of the brush Everybody wound up chipping in and helped me drag literally thousands of branches to our massive brush fire While we didn t burn off everything namely as we d have needed a few more hours and we had a birthday party to plan for we got three of the giant brush piles entirely removed photo 1201040 1209234 0 center Geoff helping me to burn off some of the extra brush photo photo 1201103 1209234 0 center Standing in front of the ember pile the next morning photo Finally and just before I wound up leaving there was another giant snowfall It was spectacular seeing the snow cover the area that I had just cleared out It entirely changed the look and feel of her property I m going to head back there in a few weeks and work on cutting out some hiking paths I m told I need to get there before all of the giant forest spiders start coming back out I m not a fan of spiders photo 1164710 1199871 0 center The cleared forest after the snowfall photo
The St Louis Treehouse This is by far my most favorite construction project I ve ever worked on It wasn t especially difficult nor did it take a lot of time But the joy that came from this project is memorable to me iframe width 521 height 391 src https www youtube com embed w 8kZOVVx2k frameborder 0 allowfullscreen iframe Our room in the Iowa house was built with a loft in it The room wasn t especially suited for a loft but the owner of the house decided to build one in each room nevertheless It did create more space and fit the overall quirkiness of the house It was built by hand mostly using 2x4s and some pine planks There was a wooden ladder that we had to climb to get in and out of the bed It was also fashioned out of 2x4s and literally just balanced against the opening in the loft bottom photo 1168026 1199840 0 right The page of plans I drew up before heading off to gather building materials photo The room had two giant windows in it and given Jordan s nightshift schedule it was extremely difficult for her to get any good sleep in there during the day I drew up some plans one evening purchased everything I needed at The Home Depot and got to work on a solution I had already ordered some blackout curtains and so I framed out the top of the loft in the same fashion one would frame out a wall I didn t want to anchor the studs into the wall to ensure I didn t destroy the plaster and so instead fashioned a base plate from a 2x4 and then ran my vertical support columns off of that While it had limited anchor points it seemed to be sound Normally I d run a column every 16 inches per modern building specs but since it wasn t specifically intended to be structural and to save on a little wood I ran the columns every 20 inches instead Once the new wall was framed out I cut up the blackout curtains and stretched them over the 2x4 studs like a canvas The canvas was attached to the 2x4 frame using staples I specifically wanted to ensure that it was easy to break through in the event that we ever needed to escape the room quickly Regardless the result was immediately noticeable The room was entirely dark I ran the wiring into the bed area as necessary setup various lights and topped everything off with remote controlled switches The entire area was sealed in with the blackout curtains I wrapped them around the top portion of the window that also bled into the sleeping area I purchased a standard VESA mount at the store and mounted our TV inside of the loft off of one of the vertical 2x4 columns Of course we had a small bag of remote controls on our bedside photo 1171375 1199840 0 center A photo taken from halfway up the ladder where you can see the upstairs and downstairs photo Finally there was a hole where the ladder was designed to allow us to climb up into the loft This let a good deal of light through and so it needed to be fixed I fashioned up a small hatch door attached it to a counter weighted pulley system and voila our treehouse was born It provided the dark quarters Jordan needed for sleeping and was probably about the most enjoyable little escape you could find in a home To make it feel a little bit larger I purchased a bunch of rectangular mirrors from Lowe s and had them fastened to the walls within the treehouse This gave the illusion that the treehouse went on for infinity and beyond and made all of the colored lights look especially cool Jordan had also purchased me a few different lights one for Christmas and one just because I fashioned these into the area and the illusion was complete We had tons of fun up there for the few months it existed As the lease was coming up the treehouse needed to be taken down I didn t help with this process and instead Jordan took it apart by herself photo 1171406 1199840 0 center Purchasing the mirrors we needed for the treehouse walls photo photo 1165681 1209246 0 center Jordan and I in the finished treehouse photo
