BBQ at Maria's House After all of the wedding festivities, but before we went off to Cartagena, Maria's mother held a BBQ for all of us at her house. Putt, in his infinite wisdom, hired a mariachi band for his new wife (one of her favorite things). We also had the pleasure of riding around the city on a Chiva bus. Basically it's a party bus with open sides. I was unfortunately over-exhausted by this point from drinking and lack of sleep and didn't really get to participate in it fully, but I still thoroughly enjoyed seeing around the city!
Canada and a Wedding While visiting Caroline's parents up in Essex, New York, we took a day trip up to Montreal to visit my friend Marciano. I had a little argument with the US Border Patrol guard, but otherwise it was a pretty uneventful trip. As soon as we got back from our trip we immediately went to Jon and Laura Weitzel's wedding. Unfortunately I was so tired from all of the traveling that I only took two pictures of the whole thing - the groom's cake.
Michael's Friends I'm not really sure how I wound up with my brother's album, unless he happened to borrow my camera one evening, but everything goes into the archives!
Katy Tornado It happened during a 36-hour stretch between November 21 and November 23, 1992, the weekend before the Thanksgiving holiday. During that short period of time, 13 states were struck by a rash of tornadoes that killed 26 people and injured another 638. Of the 95 tornadoes that occurred, 41 were rated F3 or "strong", while six of the tornadoes were rated F4 or "violent" on the Fujita scale measuring the severity of tornadoes. It was the worst November outbreak on record for the United States and it started in Houston. Nina Hendee was at home preparing for an end of season soccer party for her daughter. "I had two teenagers in the house and I yelled in my mom voice 'tornado' as loudly as I could, and by then it was quite loud," said Hendee, the west Houston resident. She and the children huddled under the stairwell. It was all over in just 45 seconds. "All of the homes were destroyed in our neighborhood," she said. "One child was injured and that was just with stitches." After striking the Kelliwood area, the twister moved northeast and struck the west Houston airport, destroying several hangers and totaling 21 airplanes worth over $3 million. Sadie Hawkins '96 The annual Sadie Hawkins dance in highschool. I went with my good friend Deidra Barak. The girls all had a plan of just wearing normal clothes to the dance, but Deidra (rather famously at the time) purchased us each a nice $110 USD sweater to wear. I wore that sweater for many years before finally retiring it.
Family Cozumel Trip After my great Uncle Jack passed away, it turned out that he was sitting on a sizable amount of money that nobody ever knew he had. He had lived the final few years of his life in absolute squalor and so we certainly didn't expect him to have been sitting on a comfortable amount of money. The money was all passed along to my grandfather and my family eventually convinced my grandfather to spend enough to take our entire extended family on a week-long trip to the island of Cozumel, Mexico. As I had lived on the mainland before and been to Cozumel dozens of times, I was extremely familiar with the area, but I think this was the first time that most of my family had ever been there. My dad and I did some pretty amazing diving while the rest of the family spent their time just enjoying the all-inclusive resort.
St. Augustine Before my grandfather got remarried, we used to visit him once in awhile in St. Augustine, Florida. He had a nice little house walking distance from the beach. On this one particular occasion, my dad chartered a boat and captain for us and we went deep-sea fishing with my grandfather and cousin. We had a pretty successful haul.
The River Inn When Laura was a kid, she used to attend a summer camp out in the area called Waldemar. So just before I moved to Mexico for the summer, and to celebrate Laura's 21st birthday, Laura, Sunni, and Erica invited me on a trip to the nostalgic River Inn. I think the highlight for the girls was being pulled around in a boat that was literally chained to my waist. I also had the pleasure of medically assisting in an accident just hours after we had arrived. As it happened, a car careened off of the bridge and into the side of the concrete culvert. Since I had just finished a medical class for my search and rescue dive class, I actually had my medical kit with me and ran to the scene.
Trip to Australia Apparently when my family came to visit Tisa and I in New Zealand and we subsequently flew over to Australia, either my mom or sister had a disposable camera with them. This roll of film is from the week that they were there. It covers the 3-sisters mountain tour, Bondai Beach, and the Sydney Zoo.
