ACL 2015 Despite having loved attending ACL with some of my closer friends over the years, I think 2015 will likely mark the very last year that I attend. The festival has gotten dangerously crowded in my estimation. I didn't really want to see any of the bands. And worst was that given the heatwave that came through just before the festival (in early October mind you), it was absolutely miserable being out there. While I did see a couple of bands that I wanted to see I just have no interest in fighting the sea of people for the experience any longer.
Moving Out of the Colo After almost 8 years of having my entire server farm hosted in a colo, I have finally moved out. I am delighted to finally be done with the place and have reduced my monthly overhead tremendously.
ZendCon 2015 and Vegas I was fortunate enough to have my company send me to the 2015 Zend Conference in Vegas. I went with a few of my coworkers and in addition to learning a ton at the conference, we made the best of our time in Vegas. My friend and coworker, Abel, and I saw several different Vegas shows. My favorite (besides the mentalist that was hired by Zend) was La Reve - an absolutely awe-inspiring water-themed Cirque du Soleil-esque show (only so much better than any of the Cirque du Soleil).
Bexar County Meeting My friend Gil runs the Bexar County Libertarian Party and asked me if I would be willing to come down and speak with some of their members considering a candidacy. Of course I was more than happy to.
Quebec City After leaving Ottawa we headed towards the center of Quebec, Quebec City. The old parts of Quebec City were absolutely spectacular. We even got to walk along some of the old castle turrets that still sit in the center of the town. As an added and unusual bonus to our sight-seeing adventure, Red Bull was in the process of setting up a giant downhill ice track - presumably for ice skating, but who really knows with those guys.
Edmunston, Dalhousie, and Moncton On our way from Quebec City easterly towards New Brunswick and then southerly towards Novia Scotia, we stopped along a bunch of smaller towns and enjoyed what they had to offer. First was Edmunston which sits essentially in the northeastern most corner of Maine. From there we went to Campbellton, but really just passed through. Then over to Bathurst on the eastern peninsula of New Brunswick, and then finally we drove south to Moncton, New Brunswick. We anticipated that Moncton would be a pretty cool place to be, but it turns out we were wrong, very, very wrong. We walked up the block around ten o'clock in the evening hoping to find a place to hangout. We eventually landed on a bar the Navigator Pub. Sadly it was about the deadest place we have been and so we went back to the hotel with a bag of pot and enjoyed relaxing at the hotel instead.
Prince Edward Island After many, many hours of driving we found Prince Edward Island to be the most spectacular place in the world. It was an absolutely wonderful and charming town with wonderful culture, food, and things to see. The entire drive to the island was absolutely spectacular as well. The only downside to the island is that the toll to leave was $45 CAD over the toll bridge (there is no free bridge).
Unboxing the GoPro After picking up a GoPro for my upcoming trip to Mexico, I thought I'd grab some shots of the package process. I mostly did this because it's the only consumer electronic that I've paid for the extended warranties with. I'm looking forward to beating the hell out that camera.
Cozumel 2015 GoPro Reel Just a handful of shots that I took with my new GoPro in Cozumel. I had rented a scooter and filmed hours of myself cruising around the island, but for whatever reason I couldn't get it to download.
Felip in Austin My dear friend Felip from Grand Rapids was looking at possibly moving to Austin and so he came to stay with me. After getting a number of options, he ultimately decided that he wasn't going to live in Austin and instead moved up to Seattle. I was just happy he spent a few weeks looking around so we got to hang out and enjoy our late nights of philosophizing about the world
