About openFace photo 36005 740 200 right The first openFace logo photo Welcome to openFace strong online archiving software strong It s been over three years since I decided to embark upon my own personal content management system CMS specifically for powering my personal archival space on the internet a href http www kevinludlow com www kevinludlow com a My first version of such a strong software package was designed under the guidelines that database designs were not only unnecessary strong but also that they provided gaping security problems to the average user As a result my first CMS which incidentally has powered a href http www kevinludlow com www kevinludlow com a for the past several years was designed such that the administrator could use databases for support but that the resulting website would be built and hence all pages would actually be static Given the system was driven by pluggable modules it was titled staticMOD Though the staticMOD system worked well it became more and more clear that in order for a CMS to be truly dynamic it could not rely upon the administrator to build new database remarks into the static pages After coming to that sad realization strong I discontinued building the finer features of staticMOD strong strong In the summer of 2006 I began working on new concepts for how a true personal archival package should be built strong and specifically how it should differ from the typical content management system The system should avoid more technical features commonly used for allowing administrators to set up slashDot style websites and should rather focus on the aspects truly desired by users photo support video support personal blog contact capabilities and etc Additionally that all aspects of text should be taggable in a wiki like style thus allowing visitors to truly learn about the website owner s world After over a year of here and there planning strong the first bits of code were written on the 19th of July 2007 strong From then on the software package has slowly been transformed into the vision I have had for it all along Some of the more interesting features in my opinion deal specifically with how entities are em tagged em throughout the strong openFace strong system For example say you are looking at a scanned photo over 80 years old of relatives perhaps your grandparents strong openFace strong has the unique ability to not only let you discern who is who in the picture it will also tell you roughly or in most cases exactly how old the individuals are in the photo Additionally you have the ability to click on the individual and read more about them and how they pertain to my life The same profile display will link you to various stories about the individual any video footage I may have of them some personal information and of course will allow you to view all images with said individuals As far as the look of strong openFace strong goes it may strike you that the website has a remarkably similar look and feel to Facebook Though I suppose it is safe to say this is no coincidence no portion of Facebook was used to design this website Additionally no codebases external or otherwise were in any way borrowed from Facebook I simply feel that of the social networking sites available online Facebook is the only one that has done it right as far as a clean interface goes My imitation of that cleanliness is nothing shy of flattery to the web layout team over at Facebook To expand on the previous statements all code was written from the ground up in Linux shells using nothing more than VIM The codebase is primarily written in PHP though it also relies heavily upon JavaScript CSS and of course HTML To date the entire codebase including comments is in excess of 16 000 lines The entire API is also documented with the help of Doxygen Though there are still many features and functions on the way some of which are even discussed in the former paragraphs I hope you ll enjoy the first new version of my span style text decoration line through content management system span personal archival system strong openFace strong

The Applejuice Pregnancy Tisa and I had been dating for about 4 months when she signed up to participate in a clinical study for wisdom tooth removal Basically it was one of those deals whereby they pay for all of your expenses in exchange for you testing out new post operative pain medications Of course you always run the risk of being in the placebo group or having the medicine not work or worse work adversely but of course the cost of not having to pay for wisdom tooth removal makes it highly worthwhile Anyway I woke up very early one Saturday morning so that I could take Tisa to the clinic around 38th street and Kerbey Lane so that she could get on with the procedure It was probably around 6 30 in the morning that I dropped her off I drove back home got into bed and quickly fell asleep It probably wasn t more than forty minutes later that I was awoken by my phone It was Tisa and she needed me to come and pick her up at the clinic I asked her what was wrong and she said we would talk about it later I was very concerned at this point and worse was that I was exhausted and had a summer school final to take later in the afternoon I went and picked her up at the clinic and as we started to drive home I asked her what had gone wrong She told me she had failed the obligatory pregnancy test that they give everyone Naturally my heart stopped beating I m not sure how long it took to resume normal function After some brief period of time she exclaimed to me that she was not pregnant At least not that she knew of I was utterly confused A couple of weeks prior Tisa had been out with some of her friends and at some point a little pot smoking may have occurred The clinical studies are very specific in that you can t have any type of prior drug intake to participate Of course most rational people recognize that smoking pot weeks earlier is not going to alter the chemistry of a pain narcotic weeks after the fact but that s how they operate Evidently when Tisa went into the bathroom to fill her urine sample for both a pregnancy AND drug test there was a bottle of apple juice sitting atop the toilet Although we argued about it quite extensively I contended it was just accidentally left there by someone else but she swore that it was specifically there so that people had something else to use Whatever the case she did in fact use the apple juice She mixed some of the apple juice with warm water and turned that into the doctor for her test So the punchline to this entire story is that I have no idea how this happened why it happened or if it is in any way scientifically relevant but evidently a watered down apple juice can alter the chemistry of a clinical pregnancy test to show a false positive

The Blue Softee Some time during our Junior year in college while living as roommates Klaus and I got the idea that our dear friend Sunni needed a present She had broken up with her boyfriend of many years just months before and was clearly upset over this event as one would expect most anyone to be There was discussion of trying to find her someone but unfortunately neither Klaus nor I were going to be of any help in this department One late evening in our cozy 41st street apartment Klaus and I took to the pipe as we did on so many other nights there It probably wasn t too long before we were stoned out of our minds reminiscing on memories past I ll never be sure if it was Klaus or myself who suggested it in all likeliness it was me but we somehow decided that it would be comical to purchase Sunni a vibrator After some initial laughter we somehow figured that it would be a nice gesture Within moments we were huddled around my smoke stained monitor trying to find Sunni the perfect fulfillment when alas the Blue Softee presented itself I filled out the order form with my information and we sent it and a bottle of cleaning solution anonymously to Sunni and Laura s cottage duplex on 33rd street There was a note attached with some sort of innuendo though I can t recall it

The Keg Thiefs Sometime in the Spring of 1998 I was visiting my friends in Waco who were attending Baylor University Specifically I was hanging out with a good high school friend of mine Tom Kelley and a girlfriend of his Tom and bunch of other friends of mine were in the process of pledging for a fraternity and he was really intent upon standing out to them in one way or another as Tom typically did I guess he figured that I would be the most likely person to help him on this adventure and of course he was right We went to a house party of what I believe was a competing fraternity In the back of a someone s pickup truck in the area were about 10 keg shells that had not yet been returned Tom and I scoped the area out for some time before I eventually making our move I parked my truck just a few feet away from the other pickup truck and killed the lights Tom meanwhile got out and quietly started moving all of the keg shells from the other truck into mine and we took off I didn t actually go into the fraternity house with Tom or at least I don t remember doing so but it s my understanding that he was quite celebrated for having just lifted so many keg shells from a competing group I probably should have just pledged their fraternity right then and there and been done with it
